With thousands more restaurants, pubs and cafes re-opening their doors to the public this week with the return of indoor hospitality in England and Wales, and Northern Ireland set to follow next week, diners can start to enjoy a meal or drink out whatever the weather.
For dog owners, it can be difficult to find places to eat that allow dogs, let alone welcome them as much as their human companions! Fortunately, dog-friendly holiday provider Canine Cottages has crunched the TripAdvisor data to find the most dog-friendly places to eat across Merseyside, now that it is safe to do so.
Based on the percentage of reviews on TripAdvisor suggesting a place was dog-friendly, they found the most dog-friendly pubs, restaurants and cafes across the country, which can also be found in this handy interactive map .

birkenhead.news visited Wirral’s top-ranking dog-friendly venue, Flissy’s Coffee Shop at Thurstaston, this morning for a quick chat with owner Felicity ‘Flissy’ Dean (pictured in the main image with a guest’s dog, ‘Jessie’) Flissy’s Coffee Shop opened three years ago and have been known as a dog-friendly place since the beginning. The family-run business, based on the Wirral Way was busy with dog walkers and cyclists sitting out in the sun.
Flissy told us that they cater for dogs with a special watering station and serve doggie ice creams. When she heard the news that Flissy’s was the most highly rated dog-friendly eaterie on Wirral, she said, “It’s amazing! It’s great to get the feedback. We’ve always scored quite highly on TripAdvisor, but it’s nice to see that we’re recognised as being really dog-friendly. And now we’re going to be making a menu just for dogs, so I’m very happy!”
In the Merseyside area, 52% of visitors to The Wagging Tail Cafe in Southport raved about its dog-friendliness!
Canine Cottages have also released the Dog-Friendly Index , a handy tool where you’ll find these and even more dog-friendly places to eat as recommended by TripAdvisor reviewers.
Covering the entirety of the UK, and featuring helpful filters for finding your perfect kind of day out or place to eat, the Dog-Friendly Index is a must-have tool for dog owners. Each place that has been featured has also been given a useful paw rating out of 5, with only places rated 3 paws or higher featuring in the tool.
Shannon Keary, Digital PR Manager at Canine Cottages, said, “With so many more people planning to eat out now that it is safe to do so, it’s fantastic to see the sheer number and diversity of places that welcome dogs across the country; hopefully this can only continue to grow.
We hope that our Dog-Friendly Index tool helps to highlight the top spots for dog owners to visit near them, as well as highlight some hidden gems they may not have been aware of.”
