Wirral takes centre stage in new BBC and ITVX productions

Wirral is the backdrop for new comedies and drama making it big on the small screen.

Such Brave Girls (pictured, lead image – Kat Sadler, Louise Brealey and Lizzie Davidson) is due to be available from Wednesday, 22 November at 10pm on BBC Three and BBC iPlayer.

Directed by Simon Bird (from the award-winning comedy The Inbetweeners), the production was based out of the old Pensby High School for boys and filmed across Thingwall, Heswall, and West Kirby.

The family sitcom follows sisters Josie (Kat Sadler) and Billie (played by Kat’s real-life sister, Lizzie Davidson) and their single mother Deb (Louise Brealey) as a dysfunctional family navigating life armed with little but poor judgement.

G’wed – ITVX

Set to be broadcast next year is the ITVX commissioned G’wed, a brand-new comedy set in Liverpool and filmed in and around the city and Wirral and featuring young local actors providing a portrayal of teenagers today and how they view the world. ITV says the show tackles some big issues like grief and class differences with a “wicked sense of humour”.

Locations for G’wed, which started filming over the summer in Wirral, included scenes filmed at Birkenhead Park, Beechwood Estate, Claughton, and Wallasey and the series is due to premiere on ITVX in 2024.

Tamara Lawrance as Abi-Cochrane, Bella-Ramsey as Kelsey Morgan, and Jodie Whittaker as Orla O’Riordan in Time, now on BBC i-Player

Also with filming locations in Wirral is series 2 of the hard-hitting prison drama Time. The second series of the show is set in a women’s prison and stars Jodie Whittaker (Doctor Who) and Bella Ramsey (The Last of Us).

This series included Wirral locations Arrowe Park Hospital – visible in the first episode – and Leasowe Gunsite. The show arrived on BBC One on 29 October and is also on ilPlayer.

Andy and the Band, now on CBBC and BBC iPlayer

Partly filmed on New Brighton beach, Andy and the Band returns for a third series of the music-driven comedy featuring Andy (Andy Day) and his band mates, the Odd Socks. On CBBC and iPlayer there will be 20 more fun-filled episodes (it started Monday, 13 November – see iPlayer) as Andy and the Band rise to their biggest challenge yet – saving Planet Rock.
