Demand for new retirement homes designed for people looking for a Wirral-based community coupled with care and support to live independently is growing.
Registrations are still open for the new Poppyfields extra care apartments, which are set to open next month in Saughall Massie.
Specialist housing association Alpha Living is encouraging those interested not to delay as it has already received 300 expressions of interest for the 78 apartments.
Interest has even been received from as far away as New York, from a Wirral gentleman with a strong local connection who wishes to move back to spend his retirement in his hometown.
Residents who have already reserved their new homes are preparing to move in and have been enjoying virtual tours of their apartments, the newly landscaped gardens and the on-site bistro. For some who told Alpha they have been struggling in their existing homes, move in day can’t come soon enough.
Poppyfields’ self-contained apartments will provide independent living for people over the age of 55 but with the reassurance of on-site care and support available 24 hours a day, if needed.
Alpha Living’s chief executive, Graeme Foster, says the pandemic and associated struggles with isolation and separation from loved ones has sparked important conversations for many people who may have been avoiding planning for the future.
He said, “The Covid-19 pandemic and lockdowns have affected us all in different ways. For many people, it has exacerbated the huge challenges of isolation, loneliness and barriers to independence.
“For some it has opened up important conversations about the future which otherwise may have been left too late. Making an active decision to move can often be a rewarding and positive step.
“It’s been great to hear how people are excited about our ethos and community at Poppyfields which will encourage activity, fun, a buzzing social scene and a place where everyone can be heard. It may be months or even years until some of our residents will need to access our 24/7 on-site care and for others they can access the level of help they need from day one.
“We will also provide a delicious cooked meal every day in a communal lounge, there will be a hairdressing salon on site and residents can arrange to have cleaning and odd jobs done for them and help with personal care if and when needed. We can’t wait to welcome our new residents into Poppyfields and see new friends and neighbours settle in.”
Care provided at Poppyfields could include; personal care, assistance with medication, preparing meals, some cleaning and laundry and general advice and support on keeping healthy.
The Poppyfields development is open to people living in Wirral or with a local connection. The homes would be suitable for anyone struggling to manage in their own home and needing a little help to stay independent. They could also be an option for those who feel:
- Where they live now is no longer suitable and makes them feel insecure or lonely.
- Those living in residential care who would prefer a self-contained apartment with care and support.
- Anyone who has an assessed care and support need or feel that they would benefit from the care and support service available.
