This is the Birkenhead News round-up of police and crime news in and around Wirral during the previous seven days.

Man injured in Leasowe Bay dog attack

Police are appealing for information following a dog attack in Leasowe last week.

At around 11.30am on Friday, 31 May, a report was received of a woman walking five dogs on Leasowe Beach, two of which reportedly knocked over a man walking his own dog.

The man sustained head, facial and hand injuries when falling, which required hospital treatment.

Birkenhead man charged with sexual assault

A man has been charged following a report of sexual assault on New Chester Road In Birkenhead.

At around 3.10pm on Friday 31 May it was reported that a woman was walking in the area of the Rock Retail Park when she noticed a man walking behind her who then sexually assaulted her.

Patrols attended the area of Rock Retail Park and spotted a man who was as described as the suspect.

New Brighton man arrested on suspicion of drug supply

Merseyside Police has arrested a man on suspicion of drug supply offences following an incident in New Brighton on Thursday, 6 June.

Just before midnight, officers attended an address in Sidney Avenue in relation to a wanted man.

A man was located at the scene, and a large quantity of suspected cocaine and cannabis was seized. Other suspected drug supply paraphernalia was also found. Officers remained at the scene carrying out enquiries.

Chief Constable apologises to LGBTQ+ community

Merseyside Police Chief Constable Serena Kennedy has apologised for the historic over-policing of Merseyside’s LGBTQ+ communities through the enforcement of legislation that was previously in place.

The force is the 18th force in the UK to recognise homophobic victimisation after the Peter Tatchell Foundation launched a campaign last year, writing to all UK police chiefs to apologise for “decades-long victimisation” of the LGBTQ+ community.

The force has been engaging with community partners, staff and its LGBTQ+ network. This evening Chief Constable Kennedy met with representatives from the LGBTQ+ community to apologise in person for the wrongs of the past, recognising that policing has moved on over the last 20 years and there is still work to be done to improve trust and confidence.

Birkenhead man charged with burglary offences

A burglar from Birkenhead has been caught, charged, and put before the courts.

Detective Inspector Kevin O’Rourke from the force’s dedicated burglary team, known as Operation Castle, said, “Burglary is an invasive crime, and the cases often involve complex investigative work, so it is very pleasing when lines of enquiry and all the evidence gathering come together.”

On Tuesday, 4 June, Alan Davies, aged 45, of Birkenhead, was charged with offences of burglary, theft, vehicle interference, and fraud by false representation. He was remanded in custody and appeared in court on Wednesday, 5 June.

Can you help trace the next-of-kin of a person from Wirral who has passed away?

Vincent Brown, aged 64 years, of Gordon Court, Greasby, sadly died on Tuesday, 28 May. 

There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.

Man arrested and stolen motorbike recovered in Moreton

Merseyside Police arrested a man and seized a stolen motorbike in Moreton on Tuesday, 4 June.

After a man was seen riding the Suzuki bike at speed on Pasture Road just before 7.55pm, the vehicle was seen being pushed to the back of a property on Berrylands Road.

Officers seized the bike and detained the man inside.

Wirral man among 17 detained in domestic abuse crackdown

Police have detained 17 people across Merseyside as part of a crackdown on domestic abuse.

On Thursday, 30 May, teams of local officers, led by Merseyside Police’s Protecting Vulnerable People unit, travelled across Wirral, Liverpool, St Helens, Sefton, and Knowsley as part of Operation Cassia, a police operation to arrest people we believe are responsible for both recent and historical cases of domestic abuse.

Fifteen people were arrested and a further two people voluntarily attended for interview.

Man charged following robbery at Matalan store

Police have charged a man with robbery following an incident at the Matalan store on the Rock Retail Park in Tranmere on Monday, 3 June.

At around 9.10am a male entered the store and grabbed a cash drawer from the counter.

As he attempted to leave the store two members of staff attempted to stop him during which one of the staff members was punched.

Elizabeth Kelly, 66, of Bebington Road, Birkenhead, sadly passed away at her home on Saturday, 1 June.

There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding her death.
