This is the Birkenhead News round-up of police and crime news in and around Wirral during the previous seven days.

Arrests made after windscreens smashed in New Ferry

Two males have been arrested following reports of criminal damage and anti-social behaviour in Wirral on Saturday, 15 June.

At around 11.40pm, Merseyside Police received reports that two men had smashed the windscreens of several vehicles on Napier Road and Shorefields in New Ferry. 

It was further reported they then made off towards New Chester Road.

Man sought after woman sexually assaulted on Birkenhead bus

Police have issued a CCTV image of a man they would like to speak to after a woman was sexually assaulted on a bus in Wirral.

The woman was on the Arriva 437 service travelling in the direction of Birkenhead at around 12.10pm on Friday, 26 April.

The bus stopped at Claughton Village, opposite Birkenhead Sixth Form College, when two males got on and sat next to her.

Man who ‘will never get over’ brother’s death issues warning message to drivers

A man who “will never get over” his brother’s death has issued a warning message to drivers nearly five years on.

Dave Jones’ brother Simon was hit by a driver in November 2019 who ran over him at the roundabout on Market Street at the junction of Station Road in Hoylake. He died four days later from his injuries.

Since then, Dave has been a volunteer for Aftermath Support, a Wirral-based charity that provides support for those who are affected by people being killed and seriously injured on the road. It was set up as a pilot project with Merseyside Police in 2005 and has helped thousands of people, including Dave.

Birkenhead man jailed for heroin and crack dealing

A 29-year-old Wirral man has been jailed for over three years for Class A drug dealing.

Ethan Kelly, of Birkenhead, pleaded guilty to two counts of possession with intent to supply crack cocaine and possession with intent to supply heroin.

On 8 November 2023, officers from the County Lines Taskforce on patrol in Birkenhead detained Kelly on Oliver Street.

Arrests after laser pen shone into eyes of police officer driving on Seaview Road

Police have arrested two 18-year-old men after a laser pen was reportedly shone into the face of a police officer on patrol in Wirral.

At around 10.50pm on Friday, 14 June, two officers were on patrol in a marked police car driving along Seaview Road in Wallasey when they became aware of a green laser being shone into the car.

The laser hit the face of one of the officers causing him to temporarily lose vision in one eye. The officer was taken to hospital to receive medical attention and later released.

Man given extended Criminal Behaviour Order following incidents in Prenton

A Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) has been extended against a man following allegations of anti-social and criminal behaviour in Prenton.

Peter Hill, 37, of no fixed abode, was given the amended CBO at Liverpool Crown Court following recent incidents, including allegations of theft and being abusive to staff and customers in local shops.

The order will run until 29 June 2029.

Police suspect arson following car fire in Birkenhead

Police are appealing for information following a suspected incident of arson in Birkenhead.

At around 12.10am on Thursday, 20 June, emergency services were called to Curlender Close following reports that a car was on fire.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) attended and extinguished the fire, which caused significant damage to the vehicle, but thankfully no one was hurt during the incident.

Police dog helps catch man following domestic abuse incident in Tranmere

The Merseyside Police Dogs Unit has been showing off its specialist skills by assisting officers in detaining a suspect in Tranmere.

At around 12.20am on Thursday, 20 June, officers were called to reports of a domestic assault at a house in Tranmere. A male was reported to have left the house.

Dog patrols attended and a search of the area was carried out. PD Ziggy and his handler assisted in detaining the male a short distance away.

Major drop in crime across Merseyside

Crime across Merseyside has fallen by 14% in the past year, with decreases in major offences including gun discharges and knife crime.

In the last financial year, 2023-24, data recorded by the region’s police force showed a sharp downturn in reported offences. The figures were confirmed in the first scrutiny meeting of the second term of Emily Spurrell, Merseyside’s police and crime commissioner (PCC).

Among the headline figures was a more than 50% drop in homicides on the 2022/23 figures, with 11 across the region in the last 12 months.
