Wirral Metro Swimming Club is a friendly, competitive performance-based, and academy swimming club based at Europa Pools, Birkenhead. It is Wirral’s only performance-based swimming club.
It has a proven, successful swim pathway programme accredited by Wirral Borough Council and Swim England with 90% of their swimmers qualifying for Regional Championships and a massive 20% qualifying for national events.
At the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021 18% of the swimmers in the British Swim Team swam at Wirral Metro as part of this pathway.
Last weekend, Wirral Metro Swimming Club attended Liverpool Aquatics Centre in Wavertree, to compete at the two day Liverpool National Meet 2022.
The gala is a Level One meet and attracts swimmers from across GB including Warrington, Bradford, Shrewsbury, Ulverston, Halifax, Anglesey and Glasgow. This is a particularly important meet as it falls within the qualification ‘window’ for the British Swimming Championships and the Nationals in July and August.
Three swimming coaches oversaw ten Wirral Metro squad swimmers as well as two junior swimmers who took part from the newly formed Wirral Peninsula Academy.
There was a plethora of Personal Bests from all swimmers and a plenty of top-three finishes. “The transition from coaching to hard racing was a pleasure to see” also “onwards and upwards is the only way now,” a Wirral Metro spokesperson said.
