Wirral libraries set to reopen this month

The borough’s readers will be able to get their hands on books from the library again as the council prepares to reopen four sites for ‘Order and Collect’ from 12 April.

Bebington Central, Birkenhead Central, Wallasey Central and West Kirby will be the first libraries to reopen their doors to Order and Collect customers, with orders able to be placed from Thursday 8 April.

The Order and Collect system allows interested residents to pre-order up to eight paperback, hardback and/or talking books at a time and collect them from one of the four open libraries.

Readers can choose their own books, request a selection from a specific genre or author or those looking for inspiration can opt for a ‘lucky dip’ where the council’s team of librarians will handpick a range of three to four surprise titles.

Orders can be placed online by visiting www.wirral.gov.uk/collect or over the phone by calling one of the libraries operating the service:

  • Wallasey Central and West Kirby: 0151 929 7724
  • Birkenhead Central and Bebington Central: 0151 606 2114

Once an order is placed, the system will generate a reference number and residents will be contacted by the method they have selected when their books are ready for collection.

The council is working towards making more library services available from 17 May in line with the government’s road map. However, it may not be possible to reopen all facilities as many of the authority’s employees, including a substantial number of libraries staff, are working in other services to support the council’s COVID-19 response. Key library buildings, including Eastham, Greasby and Heswall, are also operating as testing sites and support services meaning that not all library sites will be able to reopen straight away.

Birkenhead, Bebington, West Kirby and Wallasey Libraries will only be offering an Order and Collect service at this time. No other library services will be available at these sites, including the One Stop Shop Service, and it is not possible to enter the library for browsing at this stage.

When collecting items from the library, separate entrances and exits will be marked, with a one-way system around the building and hand sanitising stations available. No toilet facilities will be available, except in emergencies.

Residents are asked to adhere to the safety measures in place to help protect themselves, staff, and other visitors to the library. Visitors must bring their own bag with them and are reminded to wear a face covering.
