Wirral Council is finalist in national awards

Wirral Council has been selected as one of the top finalists in the APSE Service Awards 2022 in the ‘Best Climate Action or Decarbonisation Initiative’ category.

The submission was for the authority’s Tree, Hedgerow and Woodland Strategy, which has already been recognised as visionary and pragmatic by Friends of the Earth.

APSE is the Association for Public Service Excellence.

Wirral’s Tree, Hedgerow and Woodland Strategy aims to actively protect and increase Wirral’s green infrastructure and support carbon capture and resilience.

The headline objective for the strategy is to double Wirral’s tree canopy by planting over 210,000 by 2030.

It has been developed in partnership with a network of stakeholders including community groups as well as local and national organisations. The strategy presents a robust commitment to community engagement which will ensure its sustainability.

Leader of the Council, Cllr Janette Williamson, said, “This is fantastic news and comes hot on the heels of the authority being “highly commended” for our ambitious regeneration plans across the Left Bank.

“Our commitment to addressing the climate emergency is unstinting and we will continue to work on new and innovative ways to ensure Wirral is a leader.”

Cllr Liz Grey, chair of the Council’s Environment, Climate Emergency and Transport Committee, added, “Wirral was one of the earliest councils to declare a Climate Emergency in 2019. This project is just one example of how the Council aims to lead by example and encourage wider action. Well done to all those involved in developing and implementing the Tree, Hedgerow and Woodland Strategy.”

The awards presentation evening will be held at the end of APSE’s annual seminar 2022 which will take place in Swansea on Wednesday 14 and Thursday 15 September.
