West Kirby RNLI launched to provide assistance to a party of swimmers who were struggling to make headway against a rising tide near to Talacre beach.
West Kirby RNLI volunteer crew was requested by HM Coastguard to launch at 9.27am following a call from the event organiser. The tide was at 5.3 metres and rising rapidly resulting in slow progress being made by two members of the group who were part of the event.
West Kirby RNLI quickly launched and reached the casualties who had been recovered by a commercial wind farm vessel who had provided assistance initially. The two casualties were transferred into West Kirby RNLI’s inshore lifeboat then dropped at Talacre beach to continue the 115-mile event.
Richard Diamond, West Kirby RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager said, “The experienced casualties were part of an extremely well-organised event who had all the correct equipment, planning and procedures in place. The swimmers had floats and a means for calling for help.
“They made the correct decision when they called the Coastguard for assistance as they were in an increasingly vulnerable position due to the fast current. We would like to praise the event organisers for their quick thinking and early intervention and wish all participants good luck for the rest of the event.”
