Walking football participants make England team

Two of Tranmere Rovers in the Community regular walking football attendees have been selected to play for the England walking football team with another making the Northern Region team.

After attending trials back in April three of the walking football participants have successfully made it part of the squads.

Hillary Jones, Chris Trig and Sue King have been attending Tranmere Rovers in the Community walking football sessions for over five years, have rekindled friendships, kept fit, and fell in love with the game all over again.

Speaking after their team selection, they said, “ It feels amazing, it’s a dream come true. It’s something we never envisioned at our stage in life. To still be playing football at our age even if it is walking it’s great to be out there, mixing with people and enjoying it.

“The sessions at Tranmere Rovers have been a constant thing for us every week. Although we cater for different abilities the stranger’s ones still get a good workout.

“You get to meet new people here, we have a good group, everyone gets on and it’s like a social thing for us too, every week. Over the years we have rekindled friendships from earlier on in our lives. Some of us played together in the 70s, it’s great, it’s like those years haven’t been there and you carry on where you left off.”

Encouraging people to come along to the Tranmere Rovers weekly sessions, they said, “We always tell people to come down and get involved even if they just want to watch the first session to see if it’s for them. People who have never played football before have come along and enjoyed it so much they wish they started years ago. Everyone is always welcome with us”

Louise Edwards, who runs the weekly session was full of praise for the three women. She said. “I am delighted for Chris, Hillary and Sue. They have been coming along to Tranmere for a number of years now and they are always the first to welcome new people to the group no matter what experience they have. It’s great for them and it’s great for the Club and I wish them every bit of luck”
