Volunteers are needed to plant a field of strawberries to help celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in Wallasey’s former market gardens.
Seventy plants, one to mark each year of the Queen’s reign, will be planted using permaculture methods that sees the berries planted alongside asparagus to help their growth. The planting day will take place between 1-3.30pm on Saturday 7 May.
The strawberries, the favorite fruit of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, will then be harvested for a community afternoon tea celebration on Sunday 29 May.
As well as planting for the local community, visitors can also see a painting installation take place with local artist Lo Tierney, who will be completing a painting inspired by the planting day.
After the strawberry planting, Twintage Vintage, will do a workshop on fashion over the past 70 years and display some vintage outfits inspired by the Queen.
Paula Staunton, Earth Moves founder said, “This event will be a fun chance for the community to see an artist in action, inspired by the planting they are taking part in. All those who take part are invited to taste the crop at our vintage tea party celebration at the end of May.”
Lo Tieney, artist, said, “I can’t wait to take part in the event, and I’m really excited to respond to the beautiful plants through painting and art!”
The Earth Moves site can be accessed by foot and bicycle from Bayswater Road, turning onto Green Lane and walking up the lane for 480 meters. It is also within walking distance from the North Wirral Coastal Car Park on Green Lane, Wallasey CH45 8NA. There is no public car parking at the site itself, bicycle parking is available.
