Valiant Lairds defeated by South Liverpool

The second round of the Macron Cup saw last season’s finalists Cammell Laird 1907 FC entertain South Liverpool FC in a fiery contest that saw Lairds suffering even more injury woes to be eliminated despite taking the lead.

A bright start saw Lairds create a couple of openings, but had to be thankful to Nathan Davidson for a great save inside ten minutes to keep out a rasping effort from Nevitt.

Then in the 12th minute, Kieran Hamm burst through on goal only to be upended by the visiting keeper and a penalty was awarded. Despite being injured Hamm stepped up to rifle home a great penalty, but slack marking some 12 minutes later saw South level matters as Oscar Billington found the net.

The injury to Hamm resulted in him having to be substituted and Kieran Frost entered the fray, but neither side could add any further goals and the half time score was 1-1.

Although plenty of effort was shown by Lairds, they did not produce a worthy chance in the second half and then conceded two goals in seven minutes as Elliott Owen caused havoc from the right wing to provide goals for Mason Nevitt (66th) and Bellington with his second in the 73rd minute that killed off the tie.

Poor defending in the final minutes resulted in Alex Griffiths adding a fourth goal in the 92nd minute to seal the victory, but the score line was harsh on Lairds who fought for every ball but lacked punch up front without Hamm and Jay Harvey and this despite the hard work of Ben Wood.

Tuesday evening sees Lairds at home to take on Sutton Athletic in the Wirral District FA Senior Cup with a 7.30pm kick off.
