Tranmere’s poor run continues at Northampton Town

Tranmere visited Northampton Town yesterday afternoon for a 3pm kick-off in their latest game of the 2021/22 League 2 season.

Ahead of the game, Micky Mellon said, “Character is always important. You have to show personality. These players don’t play at the level they play at if they don’t have character or the ability to get up again and go,” said the 49-year-old.

“They’re human beings: sometimes you get individuals, or a whole team, who forget what makes them a good player. We’re hoping for the best versions of ourselves at the weekend.

“You can see with how the results go how tense this stage of the season is and why we were so distraught that people didn’t value the last 12 games of the season when we were demoted. With 12 games to go, who is guaranteed anything? That’s why we were so angry at the time at how flippantly people believed that’s the way the season would go.”

Tranmere suffered another disappointing result yesterday afternoon away to Northampton Town.

Northampton took the lead around the half-hour mark through a Fraser Horsfall header from a cross following a corner. Horsfall rose highest in the six yard box and found the bottom right corner of Tranmere’s net.

Eight minutes later and Horsfall increased the Cobblers’ lead with a similar headed goal, again from a cross following a corner, this time finding the centre of the goal.

The second half started 2-0 for the hosts and at 56 minutes, Foley and Glatzel came on for Warrington and Burton.

At 66 minutes Northampton made it 3-0 through a right-footed Mitchell Pinnock shot from the centre of the box.

Tranmere dragged one back with 15 minutes to go through a Josh McPake goal after a ball was deflected into his path and he found the back of the net with a left footed shot from the centre of the box.

At 88 minutes, Hemmings converted a penalty, finding the bottom left corner of Northampton’s goal with a right footed shot.

Tranmere desperately tried to level the score, but despite eight minutes of added time, the final score was 3-2 to Northampton as the final whistle blew.
