Tranmere’s home win against Newport puts them within two points of league leaders

Sixth-placed Newport visited Prenton Park this evening. Tranmere were two positions them in the league.

Tranmere made two changes from the win at Leyton Orient on Saturday, with David Nugent coming in for the injured James Vaughan, and Keiron Morris replacing Danny Lloyd.

Match Report – League 2 – Tranmere Rovers 1, Newport County 0

A strike from Liam Feeney at 7 minutes secured a third win in a row for Tranmere Rovers.

Rovers moved level on points with third-place Forest Green thanks to Liam Feeney’s goal.

Kaiyne Woolery played a pass to Feeney for him to strike low in the far corner past Newport goalie, Nick Townsend.

Tranmere defended well throughout the first half and it finished with a crucial header by Lee O’Connor and a strong block by Jay Spearing.

Kaiyne Woolery’s decond half effort from just outside the penalty area almost added to the scoreline, but it went agonisingly wide.

Newport County drop out of the play-off places due to their defeat at Prenton Park and the home team are now just 2 points shy of the league leaders, Cheltenham – which will be a great boost for their chances of automatic promotion.

Matt Hibbert’s thoughts…

A big win in a horrible game of football against a tough side in Newport who are a nightmare to play against.

One moment of quality from Woolery and Feeney was the difference, and it leaves us 2 points off the top, with 2 more league games to go before our Wembley trip, could we be top by the time we walk out in the cup final?
