Tranmere Vics to play MCC as club celebrates 100 not out!

On Sunday 19 June Tranmere Victoria Cricket Club (TVCC) will celebrate its 100th birthday with a very special match against an MCC XI made up of current and former County and International players.

100 years ago, the five founding members re-purposed a WWI Nissen Hut into a clubhouse in Victoria Park, Tranmere and began playing regular Saturday matches. Relatives of those members still visit the club to this day.

Victoria Park is an urban oasis surrounded by Victorian terraced houses which originally housed dock workers and shipbuilders working on the river Mersey.

TVCC are very much a community-focused club, each year undertaking a number of events and matches to welcome their neighbours and friends. The club prides itself on its inclusivity – TVCC host Cheshire Cobras each year as well as All Stars and Dynamos over the past five years linking in with 30+ primary schools within a 2.5 mile radius.

A club spokesperson said, “Some of our players have represented Cheshire and England Learning Disability and Physical Disability teams, however we have never faced a team of such calibre as this MCC XI.

“The match will be an experience for the MCC players too, more accustomed to playing at Lord’s, they may find themselves dodging cyclists and retrieving the ball from dog walkers on the boundary! This really is the cricket equivalent of The FA Cup.”

Anyone wishing to watch the match will be more than welcome, the first ball will be bowled at 11am, Sunday 19 June is Father’s Day, making this a chance treat your Dad to a cold drink and an afternoon of cricket in Victoria Park.

Birkenhead’s MP, Mick Whitley, saluted the Tranmere Victoria Cricket Club’s 100th anniversary saying, “The Club has notched up a remarkable century of existence and achievement, serving its community and its members throughout.

“I wish it the very best of luck as it takes on a team from the mighty MCC, the long-time guardians of the laws of cricket. I am sure the Tranmere Vics can mark its 100th year with a resounding triumph over the esteemed team from Lords on 19 June.”
