Tranmere still have chance of automatic promotion following win against Barrow

Tranmere hosted Barrow this afternoon for a 3pm kick-off.

Tranmere picked up three points on Tuesday night at Bradford, thanks to a fortuitous own goal and today starts the countdown of the final three games of the season. Rovers hold on to 5th position in League Two, four points away from automatic promotion positions.

Barrow is creeping closer to safety from relegation with a few games to spare. They are eight points from the relegation zone with a game in hand in their first season back in the Football League.

A header from David Nugent during the second-half was enough to secure all three points for the home side today. The result maintains Tranmere’s four point gap to promotion with just two games left this season.

The Bluebirds’ Scott Quigley and Kgosi Ntlhe both had near-chances during the first 45, but failed to make anything of them. They lacked a certain quality to result in any meaningful play.

Rovers upped the ante during the second half and Nugent’s appearance as a sub paid dividends that lead to the only goal of the game and secured three points for the home side.

Paul Lewis had a punt that the crossbar denied late on, but the hosts kept a steady head and were ultimately the better side, not only as reflected in the scoreline, but also in a sense of ‘wanting’ – something that has been apparently lacking recently.

Rovers’ slither-slim auto-promo chances are still knocking at the door – all fans hope is that the team is there to answer.

Tranmere play Forest Green on Saturday 1 May for a 3pm kick-off in their next League 2 game.

Matt Hibbert’s thoughts…

A much better 2nd half performance, which in turn keeps our slim hopes of automatic promotion alive….just.

Nugent looked like the player we all thought we were signing today, changed the game and got the all important winner.

Back to back wins and 3 clean sheets on the bounce too, signs of encouragement slowly starting to peek through.
