Tranmere sign trio of new players ahead of 2021/22 season

Tranmere Rovers has announced three new signings ahead of the 2021/22 season. Defender Tom Davies joins the squad on a one-year contract, midfielder Chris Merrie joins from League One side Wigan Athletic for an undisclosed fee and defender Nat Knight-Percival signed a one-year contract

29-year-old centre back, Tom Davies, who has tasted promotion from League Two with both Portsmouth and Coventry City, is Micky Mellon’s first signing since re-joining the Club as first-team manager, and Davies will officially join on 1st July.

Speaking about his new recruit, Mellon said: “I am really pleased to bring him in, he has got all the attributes that I want, and Tranmere are going to need.

“He has got good experience, good know how of the possession and the way we believe we need to play; he is able to do that very well.

“It is a great beginning for us as we begin to rebuild our entire squad.

“Tom has won promotions from this level but also he has played for clubs that have the demands that we have on players.

“When you do your recruitment, you need to ask if they can handle the demands of playing for Tranmere as the expectations are quite rightly very high. Tom will be able to handle that, and he will bring great experience to that area of the pitch which I certainly need.

“He wants to come here and be successful with us which is important. We have chased him for a while and we have finally managed to get him into the building, so we are really pleased. I am sure the Tranmere fans will be pleased we have brought such a good player to the Club.”

22-year-old midfielder, Chris Merrie, who turned down the opportunity to remain at the DW Stadium, is Micky Mellon’s second signing of the summer window.

Merrie, who played 31 times for Wigan last season, including a Papa John’s Trophy match versus Tranmere in November 2020, has signed a two year contract at Prenton Park.

Manager Mellon said: “Chris is a really talented boy. He is a player I know a lot about, and the staff and I are looking forward to working with him.

“It is great to get him into the building. We are trying to build a midfield around the qualities we have with Jay Spearing and someone to play ahead of Jay and get forward and get involved in all of the play.

“Chris also has that appetite to win the ball back again. He played regularly for Wigan last season and they are a great football club. He comes with good pedigree and played in a division higher.

“He is at a great age, and we want to work with him, continue to help him move forward and improving him. He is a really good acquisition for Tranmere.”

Nat Knight-Percival, who helped Morecambe win promotion from Sky Bet League Two last season, will be reunited with Micky Mellon after their time together at Shrewsbury Town.

Knight-Percival played an integral role in helping Mellon’s Shrewsbury side win promotion to League One in 2015.

Mellon said: “I know Nat as well as I know any player that I have ever worked with. I’ve gone through some brilliant times with him and I know his character.

“It is great to get a left sided centre back to balance up the team is something I always try to do with every Club I have worked at.

“Sometimes it isn’t possible because they are not available but with the balance, experience, character and mentality he brings, alongside winning promotion from this league last season, he is a fantastic professional.

“He has great desire and I am delighted to bring him to Tranmere to move things forward. He is a winner; he is a warrior and we will enjoy watching him play for Tranmere.

“I know as well as anybody the size of this football club and the love everyone has for it and anyone can see that from the outside looking in.

“I am delighted Nat can also see that too and I can’t wait to see him pull on the white jersey of Tranmere.
