Tranmere secured their second league triumph in a span of four days as they narrowly defeated struggling Crawley at Prenton Park last night.
Rovers started brightly and managed to get the ball in the net after only seven minutes, as Turnbull hit a left-footed half-volley past Corey Addai. Unfortunately, the goal was disallowed due to an offside call following a pass from Josh Dacres-Cogley.
Shortly after, Harvey Saunders showcased his skill by successfully evading two Crawley players, but his subsequent cross intended for Paul Lewis was cleared by Joel Lynch.
During a first half that lacked real goal-scoring opportunities, the visiting team came closest to breaking the deadlock. Ashley Nadesan created a good chance and forced Rovers goalkeeper Joe Murphy to make an impressive save.
In the second half, Crawley persisted in their pursuit of a goal and appeared to be the more threatening side, with Dom Telford and Jack Powell both testing Rovers goalkeeper Joe Murphy, who was forced to make saves on both occasions.
After 68 minutes of play, Rovers took the lead. Turnbull, who had remained in an attacking position, advanced with the ball and passed it wide to Hawkes. Hawkes then returned the pass to Turnbull inside the box, where he took a touch and fired a low left-footed shot into the bottom right corner of Addai’s net.
With only 10 minutes left to play, Crawley were given a chance to level the score when Joe Lynch was fouled inside the box. However, their hopes were dashed when Telford missed the opportunity, as he blasted his penalty kick over the crossbar.
Tranmere had a chance to increase their lead and secure the victory shortly after, but Turnbull’s header hit the crossbar instead of finding the back of the net.
Jordan Turnbull’s third goal of the season has kept Tranmere’s slender playoff aspirations alive, while Crawley still find themselves in the relegation zone.
Tranmere host Hartlepool United for a 3pm kick off on Saturday 4 March in their next game of the 2022/23 League Two season.
