Tranmere Rovers Women retain Cheshire County Cup

Tranmere Rovers Women have successfully retained their title as Cheshire County Cup Champions, following a thrilling victory against Stockport County on Sunday afternoon.

In what was a rematch of the 2022 cup final, Tranmere Rovers of the fifth tier faced fourth tier Stockport County, determined to keep hold of their hard-earned title.

However, it wasn’t the start Rovers would have hoped for, as just three minutes into the match, Stockport were awarded a penalty after a debatable handball. Figueiredo confidently stepped up to take the spot-kick and hammered it home, giving Stockport an early lead.

Stockport continued to dominate, creating a flurry of chances, but Rovers’ defence held strong, giving them every opportunity to get back into the game. Tranmere had a few chances of their own, but a strong County defence denied them an equaliser.

The second half saw Tranmere Rovers come out stronger, using their pace to create more opportunities, and putting the pressure on Stockport. At the same time, Rovers’ defenders worked tirelessly to keep them in the game, making sure they remained in with a chance of winning.

In the closing stages of the match, Tranmere Rovers won a corner. Doyle whipped in a beautiful ball that Arrowsmith expertly nodded home, levelling the scores.

With no further goals in extra time, the match went to penalties. It was a nerve-wracking shootout, with the teams tied at 4-4 after the first five penalties.

The pressure was on as it went to sudden death, with Izzie Haileh scoring for Tranmere. The spotlight was then on Stockport to convert, but their efforts went wide, meaning Tranmere Rovers Women were crowned Cheshire County Cup Champions for the second year in a row.

It was a thrilling, hard-fought match, with both teams giving their all. However, Tranmere Rovers ultimately came out on top, displaying great skill, determination, and composure throughout the game. The victory was a testament to their hard work and dedication, and they will no doubt be celebrating this impressive achievement for some time to come.
