Tranmere Rovers’ representative team from Wirral Grammar School for Girls were victorious in the Area Final of the EFL Utilita Girls Cup at Wigan Athletic Community Trust.
The girls defeated teams from the likes of Bolton Wanderers, Shrewsbury Town, Stoke City, and Wigan Athletic to win the trophy and progress to the Regional Final.
The team from Wirral Grammar won the Local Final at Weatherhead High School back in November, and were again successful on the bigger stage in the Area Final.
A fantastic team performance in the final helped defeat Shrewsbury Town 3-1 to secure the trophy.
The tournament was held at Wigan Athletic Academy and hosted by Latics’ Community Trust, and the girls began the day with a 6-3 defeat to eventual fellow finalists Shrewsbury.
The team grew into the tournament as they progressed, and their opening defeat was followed by a 2-1 victory over Stoke.
The girls followed their first win up with another in the group stages, beating hosts Wigan 3-1.
A 1-1 draw with Stockport County meant that the girls won their group and progressed through to the semi-finals.
They faced Bolton for a place in the final, and an emphatic 4-1 win secured their spot to face Shrewsbury again, this time for the trophy.
The girls rose to the challenge excellently, coming away with a 3-1 victory to secure the trophy and their passage to the Regional Final.
Details of the Regional Final will be confirmed soon, with the girls hoping to go all the way and represent Rovers at Wembley before the final of the Papa Johns Trophy.
