Tranmere reach play-offs by skin of their teeth

Tranmere hosted Colchester this afternoon for a 3pm kick-off, in their final fixture of the regular League 2 season.

Rovers need at least a point to be sure of a play-off position, with Forest Green and Exeter being within reaching distance of Tranmere going into the final day. Rovers are currently in 5th position, three points inside the play-offs.

Colchester United had already secured their safety in League 2 for another season. Colchester are currently in 20th position, six points clear of relegation.

Tranmere Rovers scraped through to the League Two play-offs after a goalless draw at Prenton Park against Colchester United this afternoon.

However, just a few short weeks ago, Tranmere were in with a very realistic and acheivable chance for automatic promotion; something that the fans will, no doubt mull over this week. Whether Keith Hill’s position remains secure in the minds of some of the fans after the play-offs remains to be seen and only time will tell.

All Tranmere needed to do to reach the play-offs was draw, regardless of other teams’ results today. This they did and have now reached the play-offs by the very skin of their teeth.

The first half was not a half to look back on fondly. Tranmere didn’t create any real concerted efforts on goal and failed to capitalise on half-chances from Otis Khan, Paul Lewis and Corey Blackett-Taylor.

It was a poor quality first-half, where admittedly despite everything, a half in which Tranmere had control. But, it was the visitors who should have broken the deadlock during the second half.

Michael Folivi’s close-range shot was denied by Tranmere keeper Joe Murphy. And then, Murphy did well keep out a low strike from Noah Chilvers.

Rovers totally failed to challenge Colchester’s keeper Shamal George for the remainder of the game.

Matt Hibbert’s thoughts…

We limp into the play offs with yet another pitiful display at home to Colchester, 0-0, 1 shot on target, absolute garbage.

There is no chance in hell that we beat Morecambe over 2 legs, and then FGR or Newport in a one off final, we don’t deserve it either.

We look like a team that is completely lost, on and off the field.
