Tranmere outclassed by rampant FGR

Tranmere hosted Forest Green Rovers in a crunch fixture this afternoon for a 3pm kick-off, in their latest game of the 2021/22 League 2 season.

Ahead of the game, Micky Mellon said, “Nothing will be decided at the weekend. It’s another massive three points, a really massive game, really looking forward to it, but it’s another game and nothing will be decided at the weekend.

“It’s important that you keep your eye on the important stuff and that’s what you can control and that’s three points, so we’ll go and attack that.

“Then we’ll adjust and adapt to training into the next game after that, so that’s absolutely all it’s about. Of course, we understand it’s a big game, there will be a big crowd, it’s great that first and second are playing each other, that’s terrific. But, nothing will be decided at the weekend.”

It just wasn’t to be at today’s highly anticipated fixture as Tranmere’s 10-game unbeaten run ended after they were outclassed by visitors Forest Green Rovers this afternoon.

Nearly 11,000 fans who packed Prenton Park witnessed a 4-0 defeat to the league-leaders with goals from Stevens, Matt, Moore-Taylor, and Hendry.

Forest Green now move 10 points clear of second-placed Tranmere at the top of League Two with a game in hand.

The visitors were 2-0 up at half-time thanks to a Matt Stevens right-footed shot into the bottom left corner and a very close range shot into the same corner from Jamille Matt.

Tranmere appeared startled by the fast pace of Forest Green’s game, but they did start to come back into the game between the first two goals.

In the second half, hopes of a turnaround were thwarted by Moore-Taylor’s left-footed strike in the 53rd minute, again to the bottom left corner of Doohans goal.

At 70 minutes, Regan Hendry sealed the affair, picking up a half-cleared cross and netting another bottom-left goal for the visitors.

Tranmere saved further blushes, when Doohan managed to save substitute Josh March’s penalty with what was practically the last kick of the game.

Tranmere host Stevenage for a 7:45pm kick-off at Prenton Park on Tuesday 1 February in their next League 2 fixture.
