Tranmere visited Newport County this afternoon for a 3pm kick-off in their fifth game of the 2022/23 League Two season.
Ahead of the game, Micky Mellon said, “We’ll travel down and prepare like we always do and we definitely won’t look for any excuses. We’re experienced at it now, we’ll get on with it and give ourselves the best opportunity of getting a result out of it.
“I’m not surprised that we’re starting to get into a little bit of a rhythm. I know it takes time and it’s still going to take time to keep it going. There’s lots of potential in this group to keep getting better and better.”
Match Report: Newport County v Tranmere Rovers
Newport County scored all the goals against Tranmere Rovers this afternoon and claimed their first League Two win of the season.
An own goal at 23 minutes gave the visitors the advantage when Tranmere’s Paul Lewis crossed a ball in that was diverted into the net by the chest of Newport’s Aaron Lewis.
The lead was short-lived and six minutes later, Thierry Nevers cut a cross back and despite the Tranmere defence having plenty of time to clear the ball, Moriah-Welsh placed it into the bottom corner.
Just under 10 minutes later, Newport took the lead through a penalty.
Rovers defender Kyle Jameson was judged to have fouled in the area during a Newport attack and Omar Bogle sent Ross Doohan the wrong way, making the score line 2-1.
Tranmere didn’t shine in the second half and their best chance was another own goal from Newport, following a cross from Bristow.
Newport ended the game victorious, securing their first win of the season.
Tranmere drop to 17th in the league with just four points from five games, sitting just above next week’s opponents, Colchester, on goal difference.
Tranmere host Newcastle United at Prenton Park in the second round of the EFL Cup on Wednesday 24 August for a 7:45pm kick off. Then, next Saturday 27 August, they host Colchester in their sixth game of the League Two season.

I'll never openly criticise Micky Mellon, everyone knows my thoughts on that one but we desperately need to change our away form and I don't see how we do that unless a change happens or so many attackers are brought in. Busy couple of weeks ahead🤞…#TRFC— EthanHoijord🇸🇱⚽️ (@EthanHoijord3) August 20, 2022
