Tranmere visited Northampton Town today for a 3pm kick-off in their latest fixture in the 2022/23 League Two season.
Ahead of the game, Micky Mellon said, “It is a place where, for the last few seasons, we haven’t played well. We spoke to the lads, and we’ve said the reasons why we think that we didn’t, we need to try and fix that.
“We haven’t won there for 16 years I think, of course we’ve not played against each other every year, but it’s all there for us, the prize is there for us to go down there and fight for. We know what we have to do well in order to get a result, so we’ve been working on that as well. It’s always a really good place to go and play football, we just have to make sure that we do the things that we haven’t done previously to go down there and get a result.
“We know that our performance has to be good, if we can create the chances that we have been creating and take them then we’ll be fine.”
Match Report: Northampton Town v Tranmere Rovers
Tranmere notched up their ninth game in a row without a win across all competitions with this afternoon’s goalless draw at Northampton Town.
Rovers had the first real chance at goal just before the quarter hour, when Josh Hawkes forced Cobblers’ keeper, Lee Burge, to make a save.
Burge then pulled off an outstanding double save, denying both Kane Hemmings and then Paul Lewis on the rebound.
Both sides had a fair number of attempts at goal for the rest of the half, but as the half time whistle blew, the score remained 0-0.
As the second half progressed, it was much the same, with little difference between the teams’ performances, but as the game settled, Tranmere seemed the better side.
Mickey Mellon brought on Elliott Nevitt in the 53rd minute to try and reinvigorate the Tranmere front line. Ten minutes later, Nevitt supplied Kane Hemmings with a nice ball, but he sent his effort wide.
Tranmere certainly had the better chances in the second half, but as Micky Mellon said, the team needed “more clinical finishing.”
Tranmere visit Grimsby Town for a 3pm kick off on Saturday 10 December in their next game of the 2022/23 League Two season.

Decent performance today. Matched them first half, bettered them in the second. Diabolical ref. That actually WAS a positive point #swa #trfc— John Troup (@TroupyTRFC) December 3, 2022

We are actually better away from home now, can we combine last season's home form with this season's away? #trfc #swa— Paul Ricci (@RicciTRFC) December 3, 2022

How any Tranmere fan can't see that as a good draw is beyond me. Mickey isn't going anywhere so just get behind him and the team. We can still easily push for playoffs. #trfc #swa #efl2 @ATTTMPod— Cʜʀɪꜱ Hᴏᴘᴇᴡᴇʟʟ (@Hopewellcj) December 3, 2022
