Tranmere in disappointing loss at Doncaster

Tranmere visited Doncaster Rovers yesterday evening in their latest fixture in the 2022/23 League Two season.

The two sides met just over a month ago when Doncaster visited Prenton Park for festive football on Boxing Day – and Tranmere ran out 3-0 winners.

The scheduled fixture earlier in January was postponed due to a frozen pitch.

Doncaster secured a 2-0 victory over Tranmere with two goals in three minutes in the second half.

Despite Tranmere’s dominant first half, Ben Close and Kyle Hurst ended Doncaster’s three-game losing streak.

Tranmere had the first shot on goal via a Regan Hendry curled effort, but Doncaster keeper Jonathan Mitchell saved it.

Josh Hawkes and Ethan Bristow also had attempts at goal, but both were denied, Hawkes by the keeper and Bristow by the post.

Doncaster keeper Jonathan Mitchell made key saves against Regan Hendry and Kane Hemmings, but it was Close who broke the tie on 62 minutes with a deflected shot.

Hurst doubled the lead just three minutes later, following multiple defensive errors.

Tranmere continued to put pressure on the home side, but Doncaster held firm. Regan Hendry’s free kick and Paul Lewis’ volley were the closest Tranmere came to scoring.

Doncaster held their lead for the remainder of the game and come the final whistle claimed all three points.

Tranmere host Salford City for a 3pm kick off on Saturday 11 February in their next game of the 2022/23 League Two season.
