Tranmere Rovers and Colchester United shared the honours in Easter Monday’s clash at Prenton Park.

Nigel Adkins made three alterations to his starting lineup compared to Friday’s match, with Jordan Turnbull, James Norris, and Reece McAlear starting in place of Joe Yarney, Dan Pike, and Harvey Saunders.

Tranmere started the encounter with vigour, seizing the lead seven minutes in as Rob Apter surged down the right flank, delivering a precise cross for Kieron Morris, who expertly nodded the ball into the net in front of the Kop.

However, Colchester swiftly responded, with Alistair Smith unleashing a superb strike to restore parity mere moments later.

Rovers sought an immediate response, with Morris and McAlear both coming close with volleys shortly after, but they were unable to reclaim the lead.

Colchester’s skipper, Connor Hall, was called into action to clear a goal-bound header from Morris off the line following a well-placed cross from Apter.

As the first half progressed, the tempo of the game subsided, with both teams striving to unlock each other’s defences. Apter and Connor Jennings narrowly missed the target with their respective shots towards the half-hour mark.

Just two minutes later, Apter once again outmanoeuvred his marker on the right flank, delivering a menacing low cross into the box. However, the Colchester defence intervened before any Rovers player could connect with the ball.

Regan Hendry came agonisingly close next as Rovers maintained their dominance, with the midfielder seizing the opportunity after a clearance fell perfectly into his path, only to volley just over the bar.

Just before half time, Colchester had another chance to score, but a magnificent double-save from Luke McGee ensured the score remained level at 1-1 despite Rovers’ dominance.

Five minutes into the second half, two former Rovers under-9s teammates combined as James Norris spotted Apter’s well-timed run behind the defence, but Owen Goodman managed to intercept just in time.

Morris came incredibly close to securing his second goal on 67 minutes with a powerful strike, but Goodman pulled off an outstanding save to deny him.

Harvey Saunders entered the fray in the second half and, true to form, caused trouble with his pace, coming close with a header from a corner that narrowly missed the target.

In the dying stages of the game, substitute Josh Hawkes saw his effort narrowly deflected into the side netting before Tom Davies headed just over the bar from the ensuing corner.

Despite a late surge from the visitors, the match concluded with both teams earning a point each.

Tranmere host Walsall on Saturday, 6 April, for their next game of the 2023/24 League Two season.
