Tranmere fail to break deadlock against Crewe

Tranmere hosted Crewe Alexandra on Saturday afternoon in their latest game of the League 2 season.

Ahead of the game, Nigel Adkins said, “Crewe are doing really well. They’re high in the division at this moment in time. We’re under no illusions, this is going to be a tough game. We’ve done some good work on the training ground this week in our preparation so far. We know that the opposition are always going to have a say in the game. We have to be mindful of that, but likewise, we’ve got our identity and what we want to go and do. It’s up to us to impose that on the opposition as much as possible.

“It’s special to play for Tranmere Rovers. It’s special to play at Prenton Park. We have an opportunity for all the supporters who come to try and have a smile on their face. Be with your family members, your friends, a mate from work you’re not seeing. That’s where you have that opportunity to come together and enjoy being there.”

Tranmere Rovers experienced their first goalless match of the league season at Prenton Park against Crewe on Saturday afternoon.

Rovers started the game with vigour, nearly catching the visitors off guard within the first couple of minutes. However, Charlie Jolley failed to connect with Rob Apter, both leading the attack.

Ten minutes into the match, Tranmere had another opportunity to take the lead when Kieron Morris set up Connor Jennings in the box. Unfortunately, Tom Booth came out to gather the ball.

Crewe had a chance shortly after with a free-kick on the edge of the box, but Rio Adebisi’s attempt went straight into the wall.

Nevitt had an opportunity to take a shot from the edge of the six-yard box, but it was effectively blocked. On the half-hour mark, Booth had to speedily come off his line to secure a Brad Walker corner.

Just before halftime, Jolley found himself in a one-on-one situation with Booth, but the keeper swiftly advanced to gather the ball.

The teams entered the break on equal terms, setting the stage for an intense second period with everything to play for.

In the second half, Tranmere began much like they did in the first, earning a couple of early corners to apply pressure.

Seven minutes in, Apter attempted a curling shot, but it narrowly sailed over the bar. Crewe retaliated with Chris Long, prompting Luke McGee to swiftly advance off his line, spreading his body to block the shot.

Long made another attempt with a volley shortly before the hour mark, but it went over the bar.

Apter created an opportunity for Rovers minutes later, cutting inside, and his curling effort narrowly missed the target.

Courtney Baker-Richardson entered the game from the bench and immediately came close to scoring from a long throw. However, Tom Davies and Jordan Turnbull made crucial blocks, denying a couple of shots in quick succession.

Tranmere Rovers earned a free-kick on the edge of the box with five minutes to go. Substitute Reece McAlear took the kick but narrowly sent it over the bar.

In stoppage time, Regan Hendry had a volleyed opportunity, but the ball was just behind him inside the box.

Next up was Walker, attempting a volley from the edge of the box, but he narrowly missed by centimetres.

The match appeared fated to conclude without any goals, and eventually, it did, marking the first goalless draw for Rovers in the league this season.

Tranmere visit Doncaster Rovers on Saturday, 10 February, for their next game of the 2023/24 League Two season.
