Tranmere defeated at Carlisle

Tranmere visited Carlisle today in their latest fixture in the 2022/23 League Two season.

Ahead of the game, caretaker manager Ian Dawes said, “We’re lucky here that we’ve got a good group of players who want to learn and that’s not just the younger players but also the senior players.

“They’ve got an appetite to learn and their application towards doing that has been great. It’s a new system and it might take a bit of time to perfect it but over time I’ve seen the improvement.

“The mentality of the group has pleased me the most and wanting to get on the ball and play because that’s half of the battle. Even when we do lose the ball, you need the right reaction to go and get it back.

This afternoon, Tranmere Rovers suffered a 2-0 loss to Carlisle United, who are vying for promotion in League Two.

Kristian Dennis scored both goals to secure the victory for Paul Simpson’s team. Scoring for the first time since January, Dennis put an end to his goal drought and increased his total for the season to 20, helping the hosts secure their first win in five games.

Just three minutes into the match, Rovers found themselves trailing after Mateusz Hewelt’s clearance from Tom Davies’ pass back was intercepted by Omari Patrick in the box. Patrick then passed the ball to Dennis, who was unmarked and had an open shot at the goal, which he converted with his left foot into an empty net.

In the first half, Carlisle were in control and their efforts were rewarded when Dennis scored his second goal of the game, five minutes before half-time. The goal came after Jack Armer headed Owen Moxon’s cross towards Dennis, who was able to slot the ball into the net.

Just before the first half ended, Tranmere’s goalkeeper Mateusz Hewelt made a great save to deny Patrick and prevent Carlisle from extending their lead over the visitors.

An hour into the match, Josh Dacres-Cogley sent a ball towards Mumbongo, but Huntington was able to beat the forward to it in the air and clear it away.

During the added time, Mumbongo pulled the ball back and Chalmers attempted to flick it towards Holy’s post but missed, resulting in Rovers missing their final opportunity to score.

Tranmere host Swindon Town for a 3pm kick off on Monday 10 April in their next game of the 2022/23 League Two season.
