Tranmere clinch victory over Newport with late Connor Jennings goal

Tranmere hosted Newport County on Saturday afternoon in their latest game of the League 2 season.

Ahead of the game, Nigel Adkins said, “We’ve had a challenging start, but it demonstrates that if we can keep getting our behaviours right, then that will help us to drive performance and win games.

“We’ve still got a lot of things we need to keep improving on, but I’m pleased to see that are things helping us improve.”

Tranmere Rovers extended their unbeaten run to five games, securing a home victory against Newport with Connor Jennings scoring a late goal.

In the fifth minute, Jennings had the first opportunity, receiving a cross from Rob Apter, but his header went wide.

Rovers came close again three minutes later, as Kieron Morris delivered a cross that nearly found the heads of diving Tranmere players, keeping the pressure on Newport.

After 14 minutes, the away team had their first opportunity when Omar Bogle’s shot from the central box was saved by Luke McGee.

As the first half progressed, Newport gained momentum. Bogle had a couple more goal-scoring chances, but his appeals for a penalty following a challenge from Tom Davies were dismissed.

On the 22nd minute, Newport took the lead. Will Evans capitalized on a knockdown from a free-kick into the box, poking the ball home.

The game’s momentum shifted back to Rovers, as they dominated possession and kept the visitors confined, and seeking an equaliser.

Approaching half-time, Davies directed a header onto the top of the bar from a corner, showcasing Tranmere’s persistent offensive efforts.

In a controversial moment on the brink of the break, Morris received a booking for diving on the edge of the box. Despite their efforts, Rovers entered halftime trailing by one.

Following sustained pressure from Rovers in the second half, Kieron Morris netted the equaliser in front of the Kop at the 57-minute mark.

Tranmere came close to taking the lead shortly after when Brad Walker’s corner hit the post but was cleared off the line.

Morris narrowly missed a second goal on the 74th minute as his long-range effort rattled the crossbar. In a swift turn of events, the visitors went to the other end and struck the crossbar.

The previously mentioned pressure from Rovers persisted throughout the majority of the second half, escalating as the white-clad players approached another goal. Walker added to the near misses by striking the woodwork with a well-placed cross.

In the closing moments, Rovers secured the victory. With just two minutes left, Connor Jennings tapped the ball home amidst intense pressure in the visitors’ box, securing a crucial three points.

Tranmere visit Walsall on Saturday 16 December for their next game of the 2023/24 League Two season.
