Tranmere Rovers secured victory over league leaders Mansfield Town at Prenton Park on Tuesday evening, courtesy of goals by Regan Hendry and Rob Apter.

Mansfield had the first opportunity of the game seven minutes in, with Will Swan missing a free header in the heart of the six-yard box.

Nevertheless, Rovers broke the deadlock after 12 minutes, as Hendry unleashed a shot from the left flank of the penalty area, beating Christy Pym in the visitors’ goal, following a deft flick from Kieron Morris to provide the assist.

Rovers came close to doubling their lead on 25 minutes, with Brad Walker firing a free kick towards Pym, who could only deflect it behind for a corner.

Two minutes later, Tranmere had another opportunity when a deflection favoured Kieron Morris in the Mansfield box, but his attempt at goal veered wide.

Mansfield came close to equalising on 33 minutes when Swan lunged to meet a ball at the back post, but Connor Wood cleared it off the line before the referee awarded a free kick.

The visitors did manage to level the score on 39 minutes, with Swan meeting a cross to nod home and bring the score to 1-1 going into halftime.

Tranmere began the second half strongly, constructing a slick move on the right that culminated in a Walker cross narrowly evading the Rovers’ forward line.

Apter had a couple of opportunities with his favoured left foot. On one occasion, he was fouled on the edge of the box, earning Rovers a promising free kick, but Mansfield managed to handle the set-piece routine effectively.

Rovers regained the lead through Apter on 56 minutes, as the winger unleashed a shot that found the bottom corner past Pym.

The league leaders responded, with substitute Davis Keillor-Dunn testing Luke McGee with a low shot shortly after the hour mark, but the Rovers’ keeper made a sharp save.

The visitors came close to securing a second equaliser on 71 minutes when Swan attempted to beat McGee with a low shot into the corner, but the keeper had it under control as the ball drifted wide.

As we neared the final five minutes of the game, McGee made an outstanding save to deny Mansfield substitute Stephen Quinn, just after Tranmere substitute Dennis had challenged Pym at the opposite end.

Tranmere managed to withstand the pressure and secure a remarkable victory over the league leaders.

Tranmere visit Wrexham on Saturday, 16 March, for their next game of the 2023/24 League Two season.
