Tranmere beat 10-man Harrogate at Prenton Park

Tranmere hosted Harrogate Town this evening for a 7:45pm kick-off in their latest game of the 2021/22 League 2 season.

Friday evening’s game at home against Mansfield was a crucial victory for Rovers against fellow promotion contenders Mansfield Town.

Harrogate are without a win in four games after a heavy 3-0 defeat away at Bristol Rovers in their previous fixture.

Tranmere reinforced their battle for automatic promotion tonight with a hard-fought win over Harrogate at Prenton Park.

At around the twenty-minute mark, a throw-in from Calum MacDonald found Kane Hemmings, but his dipping 20-yard effort was well wide of the Harrogate goal.

After a relatively uneventful first 25 minutes, things took a turn for the worse for Harrogate.

Luke Armstrong was shown the yellow card for a late challenge, followed just two minutes later with a second yellow, meaning Harrogate were down to 10 men.

It was a full 20 minutes and into the second half before Rovers finally took advantage of the extra man.

A flick from Kane Hemmings nicely found Lewis Warrington’s right foot and from the centre of the box, the ball ended in the bottom right corner of Mark Oxley’s goal.

Tranmere kept the pressure on and just before the hour, Josh Hawkes saw his attempt at goal well-saved by the Harrogate keeper,

Rovers increased their lead when Hemmings scored from a penalty after Harrogate substitute Jack Muldoon dragged Tom Davies to the ground.

Harrogate didn’t resign themselves to a loss and kept on fighting. They were denied a consolation goal when Peter Clarke’s quick-thinking header cleared an effort from Jack Diamond off the line.

Tranmere stood their ground and earned a crucial three points for their efforts.

Tranmere visit Sutton United for a 3pm kick-off on Saturday 19 March in their next League 2 fixture.
