Work began last October to convert Birkenhead’s former car dealership, Looker’s based on Woodchurch Road, into a small district centre of shops anchored by a Tesco convenience store.
Contractors, PA Contracts, will have the remainder of the development completed by Easter with a sun bed salon, gym, tyre and exhaust centre and car wash opening alongside the Tesco store creating 35 jobs in total for the area.
Tesco has now taken the keys and has begun to fit out the 4,250 sq ft unit ready for opening mid-February.
The new express store will create 20 new jobs alone for the area and play a key role in supporting the local community.
Marcus Vinnicombe, Director of Acquisitions at Tesco said, “We are excited to have started work on our new Express store on Woodchurch Road. When this store opens in February we will be able to provide a more convenient service for our customers in Birkenhead.
“All Tesco Express stores seek to contribute to their local communities. This store will participate in the Tesco Community Grants programme, which has already donated over £100 million to good causes across the UK. We also work closely with local food charities and foodbanks and we will be donating surplus food from this store to these groups.”
The development benefits from 47 car parking spaces, which will also include eight electric car charging points.
Managing Director of Dransfield Properties, Mark Dransfield DL, said, “We are delighted to see this run-down garage being transformed into the new centre which will provide a new hub of services for the local community along with creating a number of new jobs for the area.”
