Ten-man Lairds seize victory over Capenhurst Villa

The final of the Wirral District FA Senior Cup on Wednesday evening, saw Cammell Laird 1907 FC easily overcome the challenge of Capenhurst Villa.

The win came despite being reduced to ten players within the opening 20 minutes, due to a retaliation following a really bad foul that only received a yellow card.

Even so, Lairds displayed a fantastic team ethic to reduce their opponents to only two efforts on goal in the entire 90 minutes, as captain Ryan Smith galvanised his team with a superb display of leadership.

Following the early dismissal the first half was controlled well and saw the teams level at the beak at 0-0.

The second half resulted in Lairds dominating much of the play but had to wait until the 58th minute to take the lead as main striker Kieran Hamm fired them ahead with a great finish.

With Ben Graham, Dom Hoppe and Matty Beaman supporting their leader – Ryan Smith – they nullified anything Villa could muster. On 65 minutes Hamm burst through again to easily beat the covering defender and advancing keeper to put Lairds 2-0 ahead.

But, the goal of the game came in the 85th minute when captain Smith took a direct free-kick from inside his own half to fire home a brilliant effort to embarrass the back-peddling keeper and secure a well-deserved 3-0 victory and take the trophy to the delight of managers Andy Cass and Joe Sephton to complete their season.

The previous night saw the reserves gain three more points as they look to take the West Cheshire 3rd division title at the first attempt when defeating Ellesmere Port Town U23s 3-0 to put them eleven points clear of rivals FC Kirkby.

In a great team effort that saw Luke Watkins named as player of the match, as yet again they kept a clean sheet, but saw JP Leasor, Kieran Hughes and Leo Patten rifle home a goal apiece and produce a goal difference of plus 60, whilst only dropping five points from 21 fixtures.

Their next fixture is on Saturday, 26 April, at home in the KRCT Stadium versus Chester Nomads reserves with a 3.00pm kick off.
