Work starts on 66 new homes at former Foxfield site in Moreton

Work is underway at a new 66-affordable-home development in Moreton, by national housebuilder Lovell Partnerships, working in partnership with North West housing association Onward Homes for the first time.

Planning permission was granted in March for the project, which involves the redevelopment of the former Foxfield School site off Douglas Drive.

The site is one of six areas designated for housing development in Moreton and Woodchurch under Wirral Council’s Emerging Local Plan.

Runners take on 24-hour treadmill charity challenge

Wirral runners will take to the treadmill for 24 hours in an ambitious charity challenge.

Meols Milers are due to start their fundraiser in aid of Wirral Ark at lunchtime on Saturday, 29 June, and finishing at 12 noon on Sunday, 30 June. Members of the club will take turns at running or walking on the treadmill for the full time period, including through the night.

The challenge is being supported by RK Health and Fitness in Hoylake, who are providing their class studio and exercise equipment.

Three shouts in one day for New Brighton RNLI

A busy Thursday for New Brighton RNLI as they received three separate taskings in a single day.

New Brighton RNLI’s volunteer crew was awoken by the sound of the pager at just after 8am on Thursday 6 June, to reports of a man and a woman, as well as two dogs, cut off by the tide and struggling to make it ashore.

Both casualties were eventually recovered safely and the crew of the Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat returned to station to wash down and prepare for service.

All the candidates standing for Wirral seats in the general election

People in Wirral are set to go to the polls next month in this year’s general election with all candidates now confirmed.

Thousands of people across Wirral will cast their votes on 4 July for various parties across the borough to help elect a total of four MPs to represent them in the new Parliament following the election.

Three constituencies will sit entirely within the borough governed by Wirral Council in Birkenhead, Wallasey, and Wirral West, while areas like New Ferry, Bromborough, Port Sunlight and Eastham will become part of the new Ellesmere Port and Bromborough constituency.

Wirral autism charity takes over running of community farm and café

A popular community farm and café near Ellesmere Port has recently reopened, under new management.

Bromborough-based charity, Autism Together, has taken over the operation of Bridge Community Farm, formerly Bridge Wellness Gardens, in Overpool.

The site, which first opened in 2015, offers access to a community café and a range of volunteering opportunities, alongside meeting and activity spaces for local community groups.

Birkenhead election special: Residents ‘cynical’ things can be turned around

A once thriving Wirral town that feels left behind and “sad” could be set for major change – but people are “cynical” that things can be turned around.

Candidates are campaigning across Birkenhead seeking votes ahead of the general election on 4 July.

The seat has always voted Labour and the party, who polls suggest will form the next government, are promising to help transform Birkenhead into a new town.

Now in its fourth year, Wirral Chamber Music Festival brings a wealth of musical talent to community venues across the Wirral.

The Festival’s Artistic Director is Thelma Handy, leader of the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.

Wallasey business hits out at airport over charges

A small Wirral family business has accused Liverpool John Lennon Airport of “greed” after it hiked charges up overnight.

J+K Travel Limited operated by John Davies regularly takes families, those with special needs, elderly, and disabled people to Liverpool John Lennon Airport and has been doing so since the company was set up in 2017.

He told the LDRS that up until 1 June, he was able to drop people off for free close to the airport’s entrance with only a £5 pick-up charge.

Are you election ready?

With only days to go until the voter registration deadline for the elections on Thursday, 4 July 2024, anyone wanting to vote must act quickly to make sure they are election-ready. 

As well as the general election, a local ward by-election is also taking place in Wirral’s Liscard ward.

The deadline to register to vote is 11.59pm on Tuesday, 18 June 2024. Voters can apply online at  and it takes just five minutes.

National awards success for Birkenhead supported housing manager

Staff and residents at a Birkenhead supported housing service are celebrating after their manager was named as a winner at a national industry awards.

Liam Randles, Local Service Manager at Cardigan House , a supported housing service for people learning disabilities in Birkenhead, won the Housing with Care Manager award at the national Housing with Care Awards. The winners were announced at a gala evening on Friday, 7 June, which was held at the Hilton Bankside in London.

Liam was recognised for his ‘people first’ approach to management, in a service which offers a positive work environment and provides high-quality support for residents with disabilities.

Over 1,500 runners take on annual Port Sunlight Road Race

More than 1,500 enthusiastic runners pulled on their trainers last weekend for the 11th staging of the Port Sunlight Road Race.

The event on Sunday, 9 June, featured two competitive races covering 5K and 10K distances, as well as a 1K Fun Run for youngsters aged 12 and under which attracted almost 200 youngsters.

Three of the top four finishing places were secured by Wirral clubs Wallasey AC and Pensby Runners. Two podium places were also taken by runners from Unilever Port Sunlight.
