Tranmere visited struggling Scunthorpe this afternoon at Glandford Park in a 3pm kick off.
Prior to today’s game, Rovers occupied third place in the league. A 1-1 draw to Cambridge on Monday resulted in Tranmere finishing the Easter weekend in the automatic promotion positions.
Scunthorpe United were at 18th position before today’s fixture, but appear safe from falling into a relegation battle. The hosts have lost just one of their previous six games with four draws, one loss and one win.
Match Report – League 2 – Scunthorpe United 0, Tranmere Rovers 0
Tranmere’s visit to Scunthorpe won’t have ended in the result they will have hoped for as they drew 0-0 today at Glandford Park. Rovers have now dropped out of the automatic promotion places.
Tranmere started off the better of the two sides with Kaiyne Woolery punting two shots on goal wide before 15 minutes were on the clock.
Scunthorpe’s John McAtee had a great attempt saved by Tranmere keeper Joe Murphy on the 20 minute mark. Ali Crawford rocketed a shot over the Scunthorpe bar just a couple of minutes later, before missing another chance by heading over Otis Khan’s cross on 36 minutes.
Tranmere kept the pressure on during the second half and Scunthorpe goalie Rory Watson made a challenging finger-tip save to keep out a Paul Lewis header at 55 minutes.
A free-kick taken by Otis Khan skimmed just wide in the closing stages at 82 minutes, proving to be the visitor’s last real chance of the game.
Tranmere visit Walsall on 13 April for a 7pm kick-off in their next League 2 game.
Matt Hibbert’s thoughts…
Yet another below-par performance and result, 0-0 away at Scunthorpe for a team supposedly with aspirations to go up automatically is simply not good enough.
We look a team completely bereft of ideas and hugely lacking in belief especially in the final third.
