Solid performance earns Lairds a win over Mersey Royal

Cammell Laird 1907 FC entertained West Cheshire team Mersey Royal in the quarter final of the Wirral District FA Senior Cup.

Lairds were below strength for the fixture but provided a solid performance to run out eventual 3-0 winners, despite a spirited performance from their local rivals.

An early chance for the Royal ensured Lairds did not take their opponents lightly and they produced some good openings early on but wasted them with wayward finishing before James Farr exposed the visiting defence to put Lairds ahead in the 23rd minute.

Within seven minutes they then increased that lead as Kieran Hamm netted the second in the 30th minute after some neat build-up play.

As both teams fought to get a strangle hold on the game opportunities became fewer and both keepers produced good saves to keep the score at 2-0 at the break.

In the second half, the Royal battled hard to stay in the fixture, but Lairds keeper Ciaran O’Loughlin kept out their best efforts and Royals keeper Josh Brookes produced excellent saves to keep his team in the game.

Then after constant pressure Lairds scored again in the 75th minute as substitute Ben Wood pounced to fire home from close range and seal the 3-0 victory.

Lairds will now play Vauxhall Motors in the semi final and hope to progress to the final to play the waiting Capenhurst Villa.
