Social supermarket opens in Oxton

If you have not come across Break the Mould before, it is a Wirral-based non-profit organisation founded in 2019.

Its mission is to create real opportunities for young people through sport and education, as well as support the wider community with a variety of projects.

One of those projects for the wider community is the provision of social supermarkets in Wirral. There is already one in Noctorum and Friday 10 December was the official opening of their store in Oxton Village. The idea of the social supermarkets is to prevent food waste and to provide a service for local people. The supermarket is not means-tested and is open to all.

Chris Leigh is the founder of Break the Mould. He told birkenhead.news, “The idea behind Break the Mould is to create opportunities for all people in Wirral. It initially was an idea to help young people with disabilities and create opportunities to play, learn and gain experience to help these young individuals discover their potential and break the mould (hence the name) of the shackles society has given them. The journey has snowballed and now we’ve created projects to help individuals and families of Wirral including the social supermarkets.”

“We have volunteers who work remotely from around the UK and the world! I find it amazing how they feel inspired to help people not in their home towns, cities, areas or even countries and take great pride that Break The Mould’s passion about creating opportunities inspires them to volunteer with us.”

Jade Pettiner is a volunteer for Break the Mould who was stocking shelves in the shop when we arrived. She told us that she really enjoys volunteering as it not only helps people in the community but is also very rewarding. There are many volunteering opportunities with Break the Mould, not limited to assisting in the shop. There are volunteers with specific skill sets in accounts, finance, web design, graphic design and a multitude of other fields. She said, “If you would like to volunteer for Break the Mould, you can get in touch with us through the website.”

Among those present for the official opening were Mayor Cllr George Davies and Birkenhead MP Mick Whitley MP.
