Tranmere Rovers’ victory over Swindon Town on Easter Monday was sealed by Harvey Saunders’ first-half strike, which proved to be the decisive goal in their 1-0 win at Prenton Park.

Scoring his second goal for Tranmere Rovers, Saunders secured three valuable points for Ian Dawes’ team.

A minute’s silence was impeccably observed before kick-off to honor the memory of the Liverpool supporters who tragically lost their lives in the Hillsborough disaster on 15 April 1989.

Inside the first two minutes of the game, Rovers had their first opportunity as Josh Hawkes headed Regan Hendry’s cross wide of the target. Later, Hawkes played a role again by passing the ball to team captain Kane Hemmings, who turned and fired a shot in the box, but Fraser Blake-Tracy cleared it off the line for a corner.

Tranmere took the lead in the 22nd minute when Mateusz Hewelt’s long kick up-field was misjudged by Swindon defender Tom Brewitt on the edge of the box, allowing Harvey Saunders to seize possession.

Saunders then moved play out wide to Kane Hemmings, who set Josh Hawkes free to cross the ball into the box. Rovers’ number 26 was in the right position to shoot the ball right-footed beyond goalkeeper Solomon Brynn from close-range and secure the goal for Tranmere.

At the start of the second half, Williams took a shot from distance that required Hewelt to palm it out, but it fell straight to the feet of Shade, who missed the rebound, shooting it high and wide of the goal.

Tranmere almost scored their second goal with some fine passing play. Tom Davies intercepted the ball and made a driving run forward. A clever one-two pass between Kane Hemmings and Regan Hendry gave Josh Hawkes enough space to go one-on-one with Brynn, but unfortunately, the winger dragged his attempt wide of the target.

Tranmere had a moment of anxiety when Remeao Hutton made a strong run that got the better of Josh Hawkes in a dangerous position. Hutton then delivered a cross which was cleared off the line with an excellent defensive play by Tom Davies, and the ball was quickly gathered by Mateusz Hewelt in goal.

Tranmere managed to hold on and secure their first victory in seven matches, while Swindon Town extended their winless streak to eight games.

Tranmere visit Crawley Town for a 3pm kick off on Saturday 15 April in their next game of the 2022/23 League Two season.
