Runners take on 24-hour treadmill charity challenge

Wirral runners will take to the treadmill for 24 hours in an ambitious charity challenge.

Meols Milers are due to start their fundraiser in aid of Wirral Ark at lunchtime on Saturday, 29 June, and finishing at 12 noon on Sunday, 30 June. Members of the club will take turns at running or walking on the treadmill for the full time period, including through the night.

The challenge is being supported by RK Health and Fitness in Hoylake, who are providing their class studio and exercise equipment.

The group will also be hosting a preloved kit sale and their ever-popular cake sale as part of the fundraiser. All are welcome to attend and support.

Ann Currie, run leader and founder of Meols Milers, explained, “We have done some successful charity fundraising in the past and wanted to do something different to challenge us in 2024.

“We started with the idea of running and walking 24,000 miles in 2024, that’s approximately the circumference of the world. We are on target with this as the group has clocked up over 11,300 miles at the end of May.

“I have to take full responsibility for the crazy idea of the 24 hours on a treadmill though as I was inspired by Scott Mills when he did the same challenge for Children in Need! I wanted a really big challenge that would inspire people to dig deep to donate. I’m so grateful the run group got behind me!”

Ann added, “Please come along and support us on the day! We will be selling tea, coffee and cakes. We will also be running a pre-loved kit sale.

“This was very popular when we did this back in 2022. We have had some great donations of T-shirts and leggings already so come along and find a bargain!”

Mike Westcott from Wirral Ark said, “Wirral Ark is proud to have Meols Milers Run Club’s support this year. Their tireless dedication and motivation are a constant source of inspiration to our staff and their amazing fundraising efforts will make a genuine difference to the lives of our residents”

Wirral Ark helps individuals experiencing homelessness by supporting them mentally, and with secure accommodation. The charity supports over 120 people every year, with 71 spaces for people across five residential services, however, these spaces are consistently at capacity.

The event kicks off at 12 noon on 29 June, when the treadmill challenge will start. The cake and pre-loved kit sale will also be open from then. The event will finish at 12noon on 30 June, with all welcome for tea, coffee and breakfast pastries and to cheer the group on to the finish.
