Residents move into multi-million-pound Saughall Massey extra-care development

Residents are moving into their new homes this month as a new Wirral-based retirement community, which also offers care and support, has officially opened its doors.

So far 46 new residents have moved into Alpha Living’s 78 apartments at Poppyfields, Saughall Massey with another 6 about to move in. There are now just 24 apartments left to view and reserve.

Poppyfields’ self-contained apartments provide independent living for people over the age of 55 but with the reassurance of on-site care and support available 24 hours a day, if needed.

Homes at Poppyfields have been in high demand since the scheme was announced, with hundreds of expressions of interest from across the local Wirral community. The lively development includes an on-site bistro serving a daily hot meal and a hair and beauty salon. Once the residents are settled in a busy calendar of social events will also be on offer.

Pat Gerrard, 87, and Maria Carr, 76, had been close friends and neighbours for nearly 10 years before deciding they would both make the move to Poppyfields within a few weeks of each other.

“It’s absolutely fantastic,” said Pat. “The staff are really friendly and the restaurant is great. What I love most is how much independence you get. It’s not a care home; it’s independent living, with a bit of help there if you need it. I feel like I’m living in a five-star hotel.”

Maria added, “As soon as I walked in the front door I knew I’d made the right decision. Anyone who’s starting to struggle a bit in their own home, or wants to move into a more modern development should come and see Poppyfields.”

Graeme Foster, chief executive of Alpha Living, the specialist housing association behind Poppyfields, said, “There is a real sense of celebration here as we welcome our new residents to Poppyfields. It’s been a pleasure to see the development take shape and people reserve their homes over the past few months, but there is nothing like seeing it filled with new neighbours.

“Chatting to our new residents you can already sense a great spirit of fun, vivacity and friendship. People feel so at home here already.

“It’s often an emotional move but our team works hard to create a community which is full of life and provides safety and peace of mind.”

The Poppyfields development is for people living in Wirral or with a local connection. The homes are suitable for anyone struggling to manage in their own home and needing a little help to stay independent.
