Positive start to season for Tranmere

Tranmere hosted Walsall this afternoon for a 3pm kick-off, in their first fixture of the 2021/22 League 2 season.

This is the first competitive game back in charge of the club for Micky Mellon, who returned to Prenton Park earlier this summer.

A number of summer signings made their competitive debuts for the club, having featured in the club’s pre-season games.

Tranmere Rovers 1 – Walsall 0

Tranmere bagged three points against Walsall at Prenton Park this afternoon in the team’s first League 2 game under the leadership of Micky Mellon.

Glatzel was in good form from the get-go. An early cross to Dieseruvwe was deflected out for a corner and a short while later, there was good play between Glatzel and Feeney, with another Tranmere corner resulting.

Walsall’s 1000 fans cheered on as their team showed threats in the final third, but failed to get a shot on target. Former Rovers man Monthe was denied the chance to shoot through some great work by McManaman.

Following a goalless first half, despite Tranmere having most of the control, The Saddlers showed danger in the Tranmere half.

Tranmere’s hard work paid off and with 17 minutes left on the clock, the score was 1-0. Assisted by Merrie, McManaman side-footed home, scoring on his Tranmere League 2 debut.

Merrie didn’t stay on the pitch for very long after his assist, when he was given what appeared to be a harsh red for a foul on Walsall’s Tyrese Shade.

The score line ended 1-0 to Tranmere in what was a deserved win.

Tranmere’s next outing is a visit to Boundary Lane for their meeting with Oldham Athletic in the EFL Cup on Tuesday 10 August.
