Poor performance sees Tranmere draw to bottom-placed Grimsby

Following on from Saturday’s great performance at Wembley, Tranmere Rovers visited Blundell Park this evening with a view to further improve their chances of automatic promotion.

Before tonight’s game, Grimsby Town were languishing at the bottom of the table with just 26 points from 33 games.

However, Tranmere failed to bounce back after their defeat in the EFL Trophy final and were held to a 0-0 draw by bottom-placed Grimsby in a scrappy meeting between the two teams.

With Rovers fifth in the League Two table at kick-off and one of three teams on 57 points, four points off the automatic promotion places, drawing to Grimsby seems a missed opportunity.

There were chances for each side, but neither were able to break the deadlock.

In the 17th minute, a free-kick by Liam Feeney found Paul Lewis, whose header produced a great save from Mariner’s goalie, James McKeown.

Grimsby Town’s Julien Lamy chanced a right footed shot from long range, but was saved at the 38 minute mark.

During a Grimsby attack, Ray very nearly turned the ball into his own net and had it have crossed the line would have been the cherry on the icing of a cake made of disappointment.

The best second-half chance for Tranmere came following a foul on Woolery at 60 minutes when George Ray headed over the bar from a Feeney free-kick.

Tranmere host Exeter at 3pm on Saturday 20 March in their next League 2 game.

Matt Hibbert’s thoughts…

A terrible performance and one that all Tranmere fans feared as we’ve seen this a million times before, every single one of the lads underperformed massively.

It’s a big chance missed to close the gap on the top 3, Grimsby are 8 points adrift at the bottom and we didn’t look much better, to be honest, a hugely frustrating evening.
