Police suspect arson following car fire in Birkenhead

Police are appealing for information following a suspected incident of arson in Birkenhead.

At around 12.10am on Thursday, 20 June, emergency services were called to Curlender Close following reports that a car was on fire.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) attended and extinguished the fire, which caused significant damage to the vehicle, but thankfully no one was hurt during the incident.

A joint MFRS and police investigation is underway to establish the cause of the fire, but it is suspected to be deliberate ignition.

Merseyside Police is appealing for anyone with information about the incident to please get in touch to help with the ongoing investigation.

Detective Chief Inspector Peter Stephenson said, “To deliberately start a fire is incredibly dangerous and this incident could have been a lot worse.

“This has understandably caused concern for the people who live in the area, but please be assured that we are taking this extremely seriously and are determined to find the person responsible.

“If you live in the area and saw anything suspicious last night, please let us know. Similarly, if you have CCTV cameras, please check them to see if you captured anything that could help our ongoing investigation.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Merseyside Police social media desk via Twitter @MerPolCC or Facebook Merseyside Police CC.
