Plans for football hotel at former north Liverpool pub

A former pub in north Liverpool could be converted into short-stay accommodation to attract match-going football fans.

Proposals have been lodged with Liverpool Council to convert The Westminster in Kirkdale into overnight provisions for those visiting the city during the football season. It is the latest plan to be put forward for the site after designs for a new bar fell through.

The application said it hopes to encourage those who were seeking “an alternative to expensive city centre properties.”

A management statement for the plans lodged by M Ahmed said, “The former public house, including the basement will be completely restored to create accommodation for those visiting the nearby football stadia, along with those that wish to stay just out of the city centre finding an alternative to expensive city centre properties.

“The proposal is to form 19 units each with en suites including a kitchen/dining area, social area, meeting rooms, office and laundry. The target market is for football fans visiting either Anfield or Goodison for any game throughout the football season.”

Development of the former pub is being envisioned to “provide a unique experience to football fans that want a connection to the rich football culture within the area and also for people wishing to explore both Liverpool City Centre and the surrounding areas,” according to the documents. No parking is to be provided at the site, with public transport available and both football stadiums in walking distance.

Previous permission was granted for a 19-unit hotel with refurbishment allowing for a further two rooms to be made available. The management statement said the applicant is seeking to convert the top floor element of the property to “further enhance the quality and offering available.”

It added, “As the proposal has proved economically successful and seamlessly sat within the neighbouring context providing short stay accommodation whilst harmoniously situated within the existing social and physical landscape.”

In 2021, plans for the site to become a new bar were granted despite local concerns. Teresa Novotna’s designs had been met with opposition from residents and councillors around Kirkdale and despite being waved through by licensing committee members, could now be usurped by the short-stay plans.

A date for the proposals to be considered has yet to be determined.
