Oxton Cricket Club has announced the signing of Australian bowler Joe Mennie for the 2022 season.
The 33-year-old started his career in the New South Wales squad before moving to South Australia in 2011 and has particularly impressed in the Sheffield Shield over the past two seasons having topped the competition wicket list with 51 dismissals at an average of 21.21 in the 2016 season.
That led to a call-up for Australia where he made his One-Day International debut against South Africa in October 2016 before making his Test debut against the same opposition a month later.
Before re-locating to the UK, Joe finished his professional career last October, just shy of 300 first-class wickets, and the third-most successful Shield bowler in the decade since he made his debut in October 2011.
In addition to his dual Australia honours, he claimed 44 wickets from 38 domestic one-day games as well as holding the rare honour of representing four Big Bash League clubs – Perth Scorchers, Hobart Hurricanes, Sydney Sixers and Melbourne Renegades.
Club captain, Luke Filer, commented, “It’s an honour to welcome Joe to Oxton. To play in the same team as someone who was playing test cricket just six years ago is a dream come true.”
Chairman, Peter Benson said he was “delighted to have Joe on board. An excellent opportunity for all cricketers at the club to benefit from the experience of a recent professional and international player.”
