Own goal gifts Tranmere first away win of season

Tranmere visited Carlisle United this afternoon at Brunton Park for a 3pm kick-off, in their latest fixture of the 2021/22 League 2 season.

Before today’s match, Micky Mellon said, “There’s no doubt you’d rather play games than just train. When you believe you’re doing well, you want to play games, we’re looking forward to a good, tough week.

“We’re just concentrating on Carlisle on Saturday. There’s a little bit of organisation because of the quick turnaround, we won’t have as much time to work on things.  But our full focus is on Carlisle.

“You want to try and win every game you’re playing in, and of course we want to try and pick up some points away from home.  It’s really important.”

Carlisle United 0 – Tranmere Rovers 1

Tranmere Rovers fortuitously recorded their first away league win of the season with a 1-0 win at Brunton Park through a Carlisle own-goal. Tranmere now sit at fourth in the league on equal points with third-placed Port Vale.

Carlisle is currently without a manager after Chris Beech was sacked following poor recent form. Carlisle have had just three wins from Beech’s last 19 games.

Tranmere had the ball in the net after just three minutes when a Kieron Morris free-kick was netted by Sam Foley, but the linesman immediately ruled it offside, to no great surprise from the players.

Two minutes later, Ross Doohan pushed a Zach Clough shot wide after the Carlisle player got on the end of a loose ball in the Tranmere penalty area.

Both Tranmere and Carlisle squandered first-half chances with neither keeper really being tested.

Tranmere took the lead courtesy of an own goal after a Rovers cross from Kiren Morris was nudged goalwards by Carlisle defender Rod McDonald.

Carlisle mid-fielder Jon Mellish gave away a penalty when he fouled Josh Hawkes in the box, but The Cumbrians keeper Mark Howard pulled off a perfect save to keep Morris’ spot-kick out.

Tranmere visit Harrogate Town on Tuesday 16 October at 7:45pm in their next League 2 fixture.
