OMD frontman opens Michael Twist Centre for music and arts at Calday Grange Grammar

Calday Grange Grammar School officially opened its doors to The Michael Twist Centre on Thursday, 2nd March 2023.

The ceremony, led by special guest Andy McCluskey, former student and founding member of Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, was a wonderful occasion in recognising the importance of music and performing arts in education. The Deputy Mayor was also in attendance to celebrate this momentous occasion.

The Centre was named after Mr Michael Twist, a former teacher at the school who retired in 2021. Mr Twist devoted 37 years to teaching at Calday Grange Grammar School and during his time at the school took on many roles as well as acting Headteacher, twice!

The Michael Twist Centre is a state-of-the-art facility designed to inspire creativity and foster artistic expression. The centre features two classrooms, three music practice rooms, a recording studio and a large rehearsal/performance space.

During the ceremony, Andy McCluskey and Michael Twist unveiled the plaque commemorating the official opening of the centre.

Andy McCluskey said, “I am thrilled to be a part of this momentous occasion, The Michael Twist Centre represents an incredible opportunity for students to explore their creativity and push the boundaries of their musical and performing ability.”

Headteacher, Mr Stephen Gray, said, “This new addition to Calday Grange Grammar School embodies the philosophy of the Governing Body and Senior Leadership Team, mainly that education goes beyond traditional learning in the classroom.

“Creative subjects play a formative role in the lives of our students. The Michael Twist Centre will give our students an outstanding facility to practise and hone their musical and performing skills”.

The opening of the Michael Twist Centre marks an exciting new chapter for Calday Grange Grammar School. With its new facilities and commitment to artistic excellence, the Centre is poised to become a hub of creativity, innovation, and collaboration between students and staff for years to come.
