Tranmere visited Walsall in the West Midlands this evening at the Bescot Stadium for a 7pm kick off.
This fixture comes after a disappointing draw against struggling Scunthorpe on Saturday. Prior to kick-off, Tranmere were placed at 4th position in League Two on 65 points.
Walsall were unbeaten in their last five games. They were ar 20th position in the division before today’s game.
Match Report – League 2 – Walsall 1, Tranmere Rovers 0
The first 20 minutes or so of the game was in Tranmere’s control. Sadly, most of the remaining 70 minutes were not. Tranmere now face an uphill battle to gain an automatic promotion place, with no wins in their last six games.
Emmanuel Osadebe’s 25-yard goal at 70 minutes put paid to the visitor’s chances of coming away with any points. Just a few minutes later, Jay Spearing’s sending off for a second bookable offence sealed the deal for Walsall.
Josh Gordon had Walsall’s first chance on goal at 12 minutes with another 25-yard shot that Rovers goalkeeper Joe Murphy easily pushed away.
Osedebe’s goal for Walsall wasn’t the first proper chance they had. At 52 minutes, Tranmere goalie Joe Murphy expertly finger-tipped over a close-range Josh Gordon header.
The Tranmere man between the sticks was a mere spectator when Osadebe’s powerful shot, in off the crossbar, sent Walsall ahead.
Tranmere host Salford City on Saturday 17 April for a 12.30pm kick-off in their next League 2 game.
Matt Hibbert’s thoughts…
An abysmal display away at Walsall sees us lose 1-0 and with that, kiss goodbye to any hopes of making the top 3.
The way we are playing right now we’re in real danger of missing out on the playoffs too, and even if we somehow scrape into the top 7, on current form we wouldn’t stand a chance.
I have no idea what’s going on with this squad of players but they’re a shadow of the same lot who were flying 6 weeks ago.
