Kirsty Wilson has been able to go out with her children for the first time in two years after receiving a specialised wheelchair from the Steve Morgan Foundation.
Kirsty has been left disabled because of a long-standing neurological condition and chronic kidney disease.
The mother-of-three from Neston was left even more restricted by her old wheelchair, which didn’t adequately support her and required significant upper body muscle strength to move.
She was assessed for a new wheelchair and told she’d benefit from a lightweight, custom-built DaVinci Extreme wheelchair, which is easier to manoeuvre.
However, the £3,240 price tag was more than she could afford so she applied to the Steve Morgan Foundation Enable Fund, which supports people in need of specialised equipment, including mobility aids, wheelchairs, buggies and trikes.
Kirsty is now the proud owner of her own DaVinci Extreme wheelchair and a recent ten pin bowling trip with her children William, 16, Ben, 14, and Scarlett, 10, was the first family outing for two years.
She said, “Thank you so much to the Steve Morgan Foundation for changing my life. It’s given me some of my independence back and allowed me to spend more time with my children.
“I’m currently doing a photography degree and the new wheelchair will enable me to get out and about and move around a studio.”
Kirsty said the new DaVinci Extreme wheelchair was unrecognisable from the old one.
“The old wheelchair was heavy and wasn’t built to support me,” she said. “It was too heavy for me to propel and I would flop around in it because it was too big.
“It was like a tank whereas the new one is like a Ferrari in comparison.
“The bowling was the first time we’d done anything as a family for two years. It was great as I could pick a ball up and bowl on my own.
“We all enjoyed it. Even if the kids called me ‘Wheels’ on the computer!”
