Murrayfield Hospital raises over £500 for Maggie’s in charity focus week

Colleagues at Spire Murrayfield Hospital in Thingwall have raised over £500 after a bake-off competition, cycling challenge and ice cream sale, and covered 231 kilometres during Spire Healthcare’s 2023 charity focus week – all in aid of Maggie’s.

Maggie’s is a charity providing free cancer support and information in centres across the UK and online.

The ambition was for colleagues at Spire Healthcare to collectively cover a distance of 1,000km, in support of the overall company goal for Spire colleagues to cover 40,000km – which is the equivalent of circling the globe once.

During the multi-day event, colleagues across the business, including at Spire Healthcare’s 39 hospitals in England, Wales and Scotland, undertook a wide variety of activities including walking, cycling and running to raise money.

At Spire Murrayfield Hospital, Wirral colleagues started charity week with a bake-off competition judged by the Hospital Director and Director of Clinical Services.

The sweet treats were followed by a day of cycling where a stationary bike was positioned in reception where several members of staff cycled a whopping 231 kilometres.

To end the week, an ice cream sale took place bringing the total raised to £512.17. Spire’s charity focus week included a two-day 110 km walk from Spire’s Regents Gate office in Reading to Spire’s Dorset Rise office in Central London, and a track cycle and a guided road cycle from Welwyn Garden City across 50km, 100km, and 200km distances.

World record endurance cyclist Jenny Graham, joined Spire colleagues and consultants in the 200km road and track cycle event, and was inspired by the enthusiasm of the Spire team, saying, “I was thrilled to be invited to take part in Spire Healthcare’s 2023 charity fundraising event. This is the second time I’ve joined one of Spire’s charity events, so helping the teams reach this years’ goal of covering 40,000km was great fun and all for some fantastic causes.”

Justin Ash, Chief Executive Officer at Spire Healthcare, said, “I’d like to thank colleagues and consultants for taking part in Spire’s 2023 charity focus week and playing their part in fundraising for a wide range of excellent causes.

“We firmly believe in the power of giving back to our local communities and making a positive impact on society. I am so proud of everyone’s work, support and physical efforts to make this such an important and successful week. I particularly want to thank Jenny Graham for joining us and to families and friends for sponsoring and supporting us – we could not have achieved this without you.”
